They are hybrid monsters half-man half-animal, they are masked as devils and they shake their large bells. These are the Krampus. Someone says that the word comes from the German Krampus archaic word "kramp" which means "claw". Each year at the arrival of Christmas and St. Nicholas Day this tradition is proudly maintained in Austria, Bavaria, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. At Dobbiaco is staged the largest parade of Krampus of Sud-Tirol. More than three hundred masks come here from all across Europe. The dark side of Christmas is made by deafening noise, flames and monsters that invade the streets. © Stefano Marzoli / LUZ
